Levon Helm and the Great River of American Music

The whole congregation was standingOn the banks of the riverWe are gathered hereTo give a little thanks thanks-- "The River Hymn" by The BandThe town where I grew up, on a bend in the Mississippi River, has a long, rich musical history. Early in the last century, riverboats brought jazz and blues upriver from New Orleans, the Delta, Memphis, St. Louis, stopped in the Quad Cities, where I'm from, and livened up the local musical scene.
